Bodkin Design Introduces New and Improved Hyperspectral Imaging Spectrometer – VNIR-20B

NEWTON, MASSACHUSETTS

Bodkin Design & Engineering, LLC (BD&E), a Massachusetts based electro-optics company, has completed manufacture of its next generation 20 spectral band hyperspectral imaging system. The new model, the VNIR-20B, boasts a spatial resolution of 90 X 75 pixels and 20 spectral bands, with a spectral resolution of 11.25 nm per bin. The frame rate is up to 25 cubes/second. The new system increases the ability to instantaneously reveal and capture features that are invisible to the human eye from the visible spectrum to the infrared in even greater detail than the previous model.

The original system, the VNIR-20 Miniature 3-D Spectrometer, was designed in 2008 under SBIR program funding and has since been used in various DOD projects including a content identification system for integration into Type 18 Naval periscopes, and a multispectral imaging system for transient events for the Missile Defense Agency.

Although BD&E principal and founder Andrew Bodkin was more than pleased with the success of the first VNIR-20, he knew he and his team of engineers were capable of taking the technology to the next level. “With the research acquired through the development of our original design, we knew we were already onto something so we used our expertise to reconfigure the system to be more robust and capture even more information”.

Unlike other push-broom type models currently on the market, the VNIR-20B, as well as all other instruments in the BD&E’s hyperspectral line, collects hyperspectral data in real-time. This makes the system perfect for transient events as well as less time sensitive applications ranging from cancer screening to standoff chemical detection to geological mapping.
